Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS)
The Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS) was established in 2005, in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, with the aim of enhancing public understanding and awareness of the diverse risks associated with disasters. It seeks to promote effective risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery through multidisciplinary research, publications, and multi-stakeholder consultations
DMICS, a globally recognized leader in disaster risk reduction advocacy is engaged in conducting series of workshops, seminars and conferences on a wide range of issues of disaster risk management and networks with communities, governments, NGOs, academic and research institutions, media, public and private sectors
The World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM), initiated by DMICS, has, over the past fifteen years, established itself as one of the largest and most pioneering conferences on disaster management outside the UN system globally. The previous editions of WCDMs were jointly organized by the state governments, UNDRR, NDMA, NIDM, IITs, DRDO, ICMR, GSI, UNICEF, U.S.CDC and various other national, international, and civil society NGOs. These world conferences were inaugurated by distinguished personalities like Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, Dr. Y. S. Rajashekar Reddy, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India, Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The fourth WCDM was inaugurated by Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra at IIT Mumbai in 2019. The recent sixth WCDM was jointly organized by Government of Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) and Uttarakhand State Council for Science & Technology (UCOST), Dehradun, NDMA and various state governments, attracting over 4000 participants globally. The sixth WCDM was graced by eminent personalities like Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and Shri Kiren Rijiju, Union Cabinet Minister of Parliamentary Affairs
The WCDM – DRR Awards is an annual ceremony, previously held in June, 2022 and January 2025. The WCDM – DRR Awards 2025 event was graced by Shri Piyush Goyal, Honorable Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, as the Chief Guest. The esteemed dignitaries in attendance included Justice M.M. Kumar, Former Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir High Court and Chair, Jury, WCDM-DRR Awards, and Shri Sanjay Kumar, IAS, Secretary, School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, as Guest of Honor
